Abandoned children suffer from illnesses
  • By Hong Nhung | dtinews.vn | July 08, 2013 10:33 AM

Two children in a hospital in HCM City, have to endure their illnesses alone after they were abandoned by their families.

10-month-old Nguyen Van Ty was abandoned in hospital

That is the case of Nguyen Van Ty and Dieu Thi Van in the pediatric intensive care unit. They were hospitalised for poisoning at the Hospital of Tropical Diseases. When the visiting hours come no one come to Ty and Van.

On May 1, Ty was brought to the hospital with no birth certificate, no telephone numbers or address. His admission papers only said "Nguyen Thi Hong - nanny". The person who brought Ty to the hospital asked a visitor to look after Ty for a short while and then walked away.

At that time, Ty was already dehydrated because of acute diarrhea and skin inflammation. His situation has gotten better after a month of treatment.

Head nurse, Thu Huong said, "We have made reports to the police in Wards 1 and 5 to find his parent. However, nobody has come forward."

Dieu Thi Van lies alone in bed

Dieu Thi Van, a child of Stieng minority group, was also abandoned in the hospital. Dieu Ngat and Thi Nhong have only given birth dates to Van on June 2 in a clinic in Binh Phuoc Province. However, Van already has tetanus, pneumonia and then hospital-acquired infection.

Dr Quyen from the pediatric intensive care unit for poisoning of Hospital of Tropical Diseases said, "Van still has high fever so we have to use strong antibiotics and sedatives and muscle relaxants to prevent seizures."

Though the girl is in need of family care, her parents have not visited or called to ask about her situation for over a week. The hospital is unsure if they are just too busy or have abandoned the child.

Ty will cry when the visiting hours come while Van still lies in bed with various kinds of equipment around.

The hospital will continue the treatment and make reports to the police. Because hospitals is not authorised to give children up for adoption, they will send all of the documents to the local Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs after Ty and Van are cured. The Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs will decide which orphanage will take care of the children.
