Liver surgery for war veteran Phan Huu Duoc

Doctors at Viet Duc Hospital this morning completed a two-hour liver surgery for veteran Phan Huu Duoc who unexpectedly returned his hometown after 40 years.


Associate Professor Nguyen Tien Quyet, the hospital director, directly instructed the operation team which includes many senior doctors.

Doctors also removed his gall-bladder containing lots of stones and liver turmour. Afterwards, the patient was taken to the special recuperation room, receiving the active care from Dr. Nguyen Quoc Kinh, Head of the Anaesthetics  and Recovery Faculty.

Before the operation, doctors were very worried about bleeding, however, this did not happen. Life signs after the surgery have gradually become stable and he can now breath normally without support from a machine. 

According to Associate Professor Nguyen Tien Quyet, the surgery was successful. The two-hour operation started at 8:50 a.m.

Earlier, the Minister of Health, Nguyen Thi Kim Tien, has instructed Viet Duc Hospital to provide free medical services to war veteran Phan Huu Duoc.

He has also been granted subsidies entitled to him under current government policy. Many agencies also supported him, particularly Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung used VND10 million (USD476) from his own salary to assist him.
