A widow in Bac Lieu Province is living in despair, suffering from HIV/AIDS and concerned about her children's future.

Nguyen Thi Hang, 35, left her hometown in Ha Tinh Province to move to the southern province of Bac Lieu in order to find a job and met Dinh Van Kheo from Hai Duong Province. They got married and had two boys.

The family struggled with poverty and the couple decided to send their children to school in hopes that they would be better off in the future. The eldest son Dinh Dang Khoa, 9, is now in the third grade and has been granted a certificate of merit for two consecutive years. The youngest child, Dinh Hung Dung, is seven and in the first grade.

Seven months ago, her husband died of AIDS, leaving the wife to carry the weight of supporting a family. But she, too was diagnosed with the disease.

“I and my husband were just workers and I do not know how he contracted the disease. Four years ago, I took my children for AIDS tests. Luckily they were negative," Hang said.

The family is currently living in a house on a plot of land owned by a relative, but this is a temporary situation.

Hang is unable to find a job because of her bad health, and has to borrow money and feed for the pigs she raises, but her debts are mounting. 

She commented, “I always think about my children's future. How will they get by after i die?"

Much of their living comes from the kindness of neighbours and friends. 

Lam Van Ba, head of Village 5, said Hang’s family is extremely poor, but local authorities can only provide support in line with regulations. "We hope they will get added assistance from donors," he said.
