A poor woman from the northern province of Nam Dinh is facing a very difficult situation, as she suffers from many serious diseases, but has no money for treatment.

Pham Thi Oanh, of Truc Cuong Commune, Truc Ninh, is bedridden and her elder sister must take care of her.

Oanh, with swollen face and body, is living in a tent in a garden made by old cement bags.

Her sister, Pham Thi Nhung said, “When Oanh was young, some men proposed to her but she was afraid that she would become a burden, so she refused.”

Some years ago, she had a small water stall to earn money. All the villagers felt pity for her when she had to open the stall in the early morning and close it in the late afternoon.

Since last year, her situation has become even worse, and may have even contracted other diseases. It is thought she has high blood pressure, arthritis, kidney and heart problems. She relies heavily on her sister Nhung. However, the sister is in a difficult situation herself, with her husband and her son suffering from mental illness.

Three weeks ago, Ms. Nhung borrowed money from neighbourers to take her younger sister to the district hospital. However, due to the serious condition, doctors advised that she be sent to a higher level hospital. She was only able to borrow VND1 million (USD47.6), however, not nearly enough for the treatment.

The chairman of Truc Cuong Commune, Tran Dinh Tieu said, Oanh has received a subsidy of VND180,000 per month. “The locality can only help her a bit because most of local people are farmers. We hope for more support from donations.”
