A poor widow from the northern province of Hai Duong is calling for financial support from the community to help treat her son suffering from cancer.

Le Thi Trong does not have farther. She and two sisters who her are illegitimate, however their mother also left them when she was just five. They were forced to live by the kindness of their relatives.

Trong also has to take in his paralysed sister who died in 2001.

Meeting Vu Dinh Khi from Haiphong City, who was in a similar situation, Trong married him. The couple  lived in a tent.

Neighbours sympathised with the couple and lent them money to build a new house.

Nonetheless, misfortune struck the family again. One day in 2012, when it was raining very heavily, her husband climbed to the roof to check it. He fell to the ground and fainted. Despite being taken to the hospital immediately, he died one day later, leaving two small children and a large debt for the house behind.

She further was shocked when she was informed by doctors that her 15-year-old son suffered from eye nerve fibroma, which caused blindness in his right eye. The boy was forced to stop his studies for nearly a year to help his mother.

Due to the bad health, Trong could not find work. Since they live near the river they have had to resort to hunting for snails and tiny shrimp, earning between VND20-30,000 per day.

Mrs. Trong has been trying to sell the house, but to date has found no buyers. Many feel that the house is cursed and fear bad luck.
