A 13-year-old boy in Hai Duong Province is struggling to take care of his brother and sister who both suffer from mental illness after their parents died.

Nguyen Duc Dat is studying at the seventh grade at Binh Minh Secondary School in Binh Giang District’s Binh Minh Commune. His father died when he was just one week old, leaving his mother with three children, including two with mental problems.

Unfortunately, his mother suddenly died just some days after the 2014 Tet Festival, leaving Dat to take care his older brother and sister.

According to the Deputy Principal of Binh Minh Secondary School, Hoang Thi Lieu, Dat is a good student. "However he's often seen crying silently during classes after his mother died," Lieu said.

Dat said that after his mother died, several neighbourers have provided them with food and condolences as well but he still feels lonely.

"Without my mother, my family has fallen into a desperate situation. Now I have to take over my mother’s tasks including preparing meals, doing cleaning and taking care of my older brother and sister,” Dai shared.

Little Dat feeling self-pity of his life after his mother died

Vu Duy Hao, a communal policeman said local authorities have provided the family with some support but that is not enough. "All family burdens have fallen on the shoulder of little Dat,” he said.

After school, Dat has to hurry home to prepare meals for his brother and sister who can do nothing but ask for food when they are hungry without being aware of the hardship and sorrows faced by their younger brother.

Even though he has got used to the problems of his brother and sister since he was born, Dat still finds it hard without mother.

“But I’ll try my best to take care of my older sister and older brother as my mother told me that they were born less lucky than me,” Dat confirmed.
