The life of a 9-month-old boy from the Thai ethnic minority group in Lai Chau Province, whose heart is on the right of the chest, is at risk because his family cannot afford a surgery.

The boy, Ca Van Thai Hoa, is the son of Ca Thi Hoa from Nam Tam Commune, Sin Ho District. She and her son now depend on charitable meals of Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi, meanwhile the boy is constantly hungry. However, she does not have enough breast milk to feed him.

One of Hoa's relatives said that she and her son have been hosiptalised for more than two weeks, but do not have money to buy food. She stays in bed to take care of the sick boy who cries all night.

Doctor Nguyen Xuan Vinh from Viet Duc Hospital, said the boy suffers from a complicated type of heart disease; a deformity which caused his heart to be on the right of the chest. Surgery has been delayed twice because of his bad condition.

Hoa and husband sought doctors’ help with all hospitalisation procedures and even instructions on caring for their child, as they just can say only a few words in Vietnamese. The boy needs an operation to save his life, but his family is too poor to be able to afford it.

The mother powerless to save her son

Hoa said she and her husband got married when they were 18 years old and had five children. The couple did not have a chance to go to school. Asked why they had so many children despite living in the difficult situation, Hoa said that they were trying to have a boy.

Hoa said she might take her son home so that his sisters can see him before he dies.
