A poor family from Tra Vinh Province with two members suffering from cancer is calling for financial support from the community.

The misfortune fell on Le Thi Buoi's family in 1999, when her eldest son was diagnosed with blood cancer. They had to sell their house and land for his treatment.

Buoi said, "Two years later, my husband left for another woman so I had to take care of everything. But we were only able to get through one year before my son died. His father didn't even come back to see him for the last time. I asked the hospital to cremate his body for free so that I could bring him back to my hometown."

After returning to her hometown in Xom Choi Village Buoi had to let her youngest son at home to study while she went to HCM City to look for job. A few years later, she was shocked upon learning that she had breast cancer. "At the time, I could care less about it because of the poverty we were living in. I was also still in pain after loosing my son. I ignored it for years until my breast swelled and hurt."

She borrowed money and went to the hospital. Since her health deteriorated quickly and her absent days increased, Buoi was forced to quit her job. Her 15-year-old son, Tran Hoang Nam, dropped out of school to take care of her in HCM City, but the treatment was too expensive. "There were times I just wanted to die but I tried fighting the illness for my son. The charity meals at the hospital have helped us live," Buoi said.

According to Buoi, they have some social health insurance, but there are a number of medicines which are not covered. Meanwhile their debt has increased to over VND20 million. Nguyen Van Ngoan, head of Xom Choi Village, attested to Buoi's situation and said that her family is one of the poorest in the village.

Her diagnosis doctors has just informed Buoi that her cancer had spread to her lung and long-term treatment at hospital is required.
