A poor man in An Giang Province is in desperate need of financial support after he and his newborn son were serious injured in a traffic accident.

Nguyen Van Nam and Kim Ngoc married seven years ago. "After our first child was born, Ngoc made conical hats and I worked as a day laborer at construction sites. We could still afford our child's study then," Nam said.

Early this year, Ngoc became pregnant with their second child, and in October, she was taken to hospital by motorbike when she went into labour.

"I drove very carefully to keep her safe. There was a construction site in My Thoi Ward, so I slowed down and drove close to the sidewalk. But, out of nowhere, a concrete mixer truck hit the back of my bike. I was thrown onto the pavement with half of my foot run over by the truck. I tried to crawl to my wife. Half of her entire body was also run over, but she kept looking and pointing to the side, where our baby was lying on the street."

Nam in hospital.

Nam's wife died on the spot and his leg had to be amputated. One leg of his newborn son was also amputated.

Baby loses leg.

Dr. Nguyen Van Tuan, from Cho Ray Hospital, where Nam is being treated, said, "We haven't detected any other serious injuries. But, because the patient said he felt pain in his chest and stomach, we want to keep him under observation to decide the best method of treatment."

Nam has not been informed about his son's leg. His brother said, "We're all poor and can't help much. The Cho Ray Hospital told us that the cost could reach around VND20 million (USD952). We don't know where we could come up with that amount of money. And how will he continue to work with his legs like that?"

Dinh Van Tu, vice chairman of Phu Thuan Commune People's Committee, said, "Local authorities can only give assistance with funeral expenses. We hope the community will help Nam and his son overcome their circumstance."
