A poor elderly woman in the northern province of Phu Tho is calling for financial help from the community to support her two ill daughters.

Despite the fact she is 80 years old, Mrs. Hoang Thi Ky in Ha Hoa District still has to work in paddy fields to earn rice to feed her daughters.

She lives in a small palm roofed house that leaks when the rain is heavy. Ky has nine children, including six girls and three sons. Only one of the her three sons is still alive, but he suffers from mental health issues due to a traffic accident 30 years ago.

Her daughters Do Thi De, 53, and Do Thi Nguyen, 46, lso have untreated mental issues. They tear at their clothes, destroy furniture and even attack people.

Mrs. Ky’s youngest daughter Do Thi Han, 39, was born with heart disease and has undergone three surgeries for the condition, but is still in bad condition.

Le Tien Thinh, chairman of the People’s Committee of Vo Tranh Commune, said Mrs. Ky is often attacked by her mentally-ill children. For many years, local authorities have supported her, but the commune remains poor, so the assistance is modest.
