A seriously ill little brother and a father with cancer has forced a woman from a poor faming family in Thanh Hoa Province to abandon her medical studies to care for them. 

Nguyen Anh Quoc, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Dong Tien Commune, said Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hong's family has been a poor household in Thieu Son District for many years, and relies on rice farming for a meagre income and what little the local community can do for them.

Mrs. Hong’s son, Le Dinh Dong, 11, is being treated at the National Institutes of Health and Blood Transfusion for leukaemia. His sister, Le Thi Thanh, a 20-year old student at Thanh Hoa Medical College, has had to put aside her studies to take care of him.

Thanh said Dong was born with deformed legs and, at age five, was diagnosed with autism. He has since been found to have leukaemia.

To ease the family's financial burden, Thanh has determined to stop her medical studies, but Mrs Hong wants her to continue her studies, though Thanh's father is also seriously ill.

The farther suffers from neuroepidermal tumour

He was found in 2011 to have a neuroepidermal tumour, which has spread and is now attacking his internal organs, leaving him in constant pain, but the family cannot afford to take him to hospital for treatment.
