Thuong taking care of his wife 

Le Van Thuong, 63, of Ai Tu Town in Trieu Phong District, is himself in ill health but works hard to afford medical treatment for his wife, Doan Thi Thuy Hoa, who has heart disease, while securing an education for his son and daughter, both of whom also struggle with illness.

Thuong joined the army in September 1982 and was involved in a military battle at Truong Sa Lon Island, after which he was assigned to Hai Phong City before returning home.

Even though he suffered from several health problems, he and his wife tried their best to support their family and bring up their children.

They cannot afford more medical treatment

In 2000, Hoa was diagnosed with heart disease, but the family ran out of money after only three months of treatment at Hue Central Hospital.

A short time later, their first son Le Hoai NaM, 25, who was styding at Da Nang University of Technology, was diagnosed to have the same disease as his mother. Nam had to leave his school for medical treatment. He later graduated from the College of Construction Material Technology but still needs medical care.

Thuong’s daughter, Le Hoai Nhi, a first year student at the Hanoi University of Technology, was recently diagnosed with a rare blood parasite, which will require long treatment.

“When my daughter called us to ask for money to pay for her tuition fees, we don’t know what to do. I can’t even afford to pay for my wife's hospital treatment," he said, adding that he had already run up bank debts of VND100m.
