  • By Pham Oanh - Dinh Hung | dtinews.vn | February 16, 2015 08:32 AM

A young man in Nam Dinh Province lost his arms and suffers severe burns after being electrocuted in a work accident, but is unable to afford medical he needs to stay alive and feels he is a burden on his family.

Manh lost his arms to the accident

Pham Duc Manh lost his mother when he was three and his father, Pham Manh Thang, who fought the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, is in ill health.

"He remarried when I was six and has two daughters, but both my sisters have had to drop out of school," Manh said.

He only finished ninth grade and his youngest sister had to drop out of high school because the family couldn't afford to continue her education. One of his half-sisters reached university, but has since had to drop out to find work.

Manh suffers from electrical burns

Manh worked as a welder to support the family, but an accident involving high-voltage electricity in August last year left him with severe burns to 50 percent of his body and damaged his lungs. Unable to afford intensive medical treatment, he went home, but his burns became necrotic and doctors were forced to amputate both his arms.

"It's my fault, I couldn't take care of him," Pham Manh Thang, Manh's father, said. "If only I could have kept him in hospital, he might not have lost his arms. I will regret it for the rest of my life."

Manh's father cares for him

Manh, tortured by constant pain, said he felt helpless and was a burden on his family. They could not even afford a sprig of peach blossom for Tet.

"I accept my fate now," he said. "But my father is old and still has to take care of everything for me. And my sisters too."
