People risk life on damaged bridge

People in Ho Dac Kien Commune, Soc Trang Province are looking for funding for a new bridge.

Kenh Gon Bridge is 1.5 metres wide

Ho Dac Kien Commune is criss-crossed with rivers and canals, but many of its bridges are increasingly dilapidated. Kenh Gon Bridge was constructed by the locals years ago but it is now severely run-down.

Kenh Gon Bridge is just 1.5 metres wide and 25 metres long. It has been repaired for multiple times but some of its arches can no longer be repaired.

 The deteriorating bridge

Nguyen Viet Khoi, a resident in Dac Luc Hamlet, said, "It was built from wood donated by locals. After some deterioration, we donated cement to make it stronger, but we don't know anything about construction so it has continued to deteriorate. Now the damage is too severe for any fix."

Khoi went on to say that since the bridge is narrow and has many holes, people have begun to experience accidents. Everyone is particularly worried that school children might face serious injury and the need for a sturdier bridge has become more urgent.

"It was raining that day and a student slipped off the bridge with their bicycle and fell into the water. Luckily he was spotted in time," another local said.

The bridge has many damaged parts

Nguyen Van Thanh, a student in the commune, said even though he used the bridge every day, it still scared him. "The bridge already has many damaged parts and without railings, it's even scarier to walk on."

Son Po, deputy chairman of Chau Thanh District, said Ho Dac Kien Commune was a disadvantaged area and had many difficulties due to weak infrastructure and Kenh Gon Bridge has caused many concerns among the locals.

 Students cross the bridge everyday

According to Nguyen Van My, chairman of Ho Dac Kien Commune, the bridge was a particularly important bridge that connects the commune to the outside including My Tu District in Soc Trang Province or Nga Bay Commune in Hau Giang Province.

It's also the most damaged bridge but the communal authorities can't afford a new bridge with its limited budget.
