A poor couple are living on food donations as the wife has to undergo life-saving surgery due to a digestive problem.

Thao Thi Chu who comes from Sapa District, Lao Cai Province, is now staying at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi. But the couple can only pay the surgery fees.

“We have only VND500,000 left and I don’t know how to have enough money for my wife’s treatment. She must recover to take care of the three children,” her husband, Sung A Dung, said.

Doctor Nguyen Nghe Tinh from Bach Mai Hospital said that Chu was hospitalised for jaundice and what appeared to be a bile duct obstruction caused by a suspected tumour. She needs urgent surgery before the condition can become more critical.

“Every day, the couple has to live on free meals provided by the hospital. The disease requires long-term and costly treatment,” the doctor added.

Meanwhile, the couple’s youngest child also suffered an injury after managing to get burnt; she has not been able to receive modern treatment due to the family’s lack of money.
