Le Thanh Dat, a 10-month-old boy in Quang Ninh Province is dying from a congenital heart defect as his parents cannot afford the surgery.

Tran Thi Huong, Dat's mother, said, "He was diagnosed with the congenital heart defect Tetralogy of Fallot when he was 20 days old. We tried to treat him at Hanoi's National Paediatrics Hospital for months but had to bring him home when our money ran out. At home, he would suddenly faint so we gave him CPR."

Dat's loss of consciousness occurs more frequently but his parents do not know what to do. Le Thanh Huu, Dat's father works part-time at a ship-building yard for VND2-3m a month which is only enough to cover his son's milk and some necessities. Stress has left Dat's mother unable to produce milk.

Fortunately, a group of doctors from E Hospital found out the severe condition of Dat when providing screenings for heart diseases for the children in Quang Ninh Province.

"Dat was in critical condition and needed surgery so I encouraged his parents to go to hospital again," said Dr. Tran Dac Dai, head of Pediatric Cardiology Faculty.

Worried for their son, Dat's parents admitted him to Cardiovascular Centre - E Hospital in Hanoi but still couldn't know where to borrow the VND60m (USD2,800) for his surgery.

"Last time at National Paediatric Hospital, I borrowed money from everyone I could. This time I can’t borrow from anyone," Dat's father said.
