Dan Tri transferred VND47,600,000 (USD2,200) to Nguyen Thi Tham and her nephew who is suffering from cerebral palsy in Dak Nong Province on April 21.

Tham's father died when she was small and because of poverty, she didn't go to school. Tham worked hard to support a mentally-ill mother and sister. Three years ago, Tham's sister gave birth to Nguyen Dinh Hieu and despite not knowing who the father is, Tham decided to take care of Hieu like her own child.

Unfortunately, Hieu showed abnormal behaviour while growing up. He often had colds and sicknesses because of weak health. In addition, his left arm is partially paralysed and can't move around freely. Villagers donated VND1.5m to bring Hieu to Children's Hospital 2 in HCM City where he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

As her mother and sister often leave home to wander around, Tham is the only one can take care of Hieu so she carries him with her every day to collect waste to resell later. Her daily income is about VND30,000. At noon, she asks to wash dishes at restaurants in exchange for meals.

Tham said since their story was published, they have received many calls from individuals as well as social organisations. Readers living from far away also came to visit and give gifts.

Tham's wish is that once Hieu's condition gets better, she'll send him to kindergarten and find a better job. Upon accepting the donation, Tham was moved and said she had never dreamt of having so much money in her life.

"Thank you everyone for helping us during the hard times. I'll spend the money to treat and care for Hieu because he is all I have in my life," Tham said.

Nguyen Khac Dung, vice chairman of Thuan An Commune, also expressed gratitude to everyone that gave supports to Tham's family. "I hope other disadvantaged families can also get help and overcome the challenges they face," he said.
