Mountainous pupils in need of new classrooms

Children in a remote area of the mountainous province of Son La are in need of financial support to help replace old, dilapidated classrooms.

Pang Sang B school site in Pang Village, Mai Son District, is one of Chieng Kheo Primary School's branches. In order to get to the school, it’s a 10km drive along a rough road by a steep cliff.

"We already got used to it and don't feel scared or think that it's a hardship anymore. But the pupils there are still facing various disadvantages. We don't know how to help them with the dilapidated classrooms, torn books and broken furniture," said Vu Thi Hoa, head of Chieng Kheo Primary School.

Winds often get in through the holes and wide gaps of the walls and the wood planks and pillars are largely damaged by termites. The teachers said they had to use stones to fortify the classrooms when it got windy.

Dilapidated classrooms

However, the gaps also let the sun shine in the classrooms as there is no electricity. The teachers then decided to replace part of the roof with a transparent plastic sheet to get more light. Pang Sang B school site has four classrooms for five different grades. Each classroom has enough room for two sets of long tables and benches.

"Here, it's really cold in winter and absolutely hot in summer. But there's no electricity so we can't buy fans for the pupils," Hoa said.

The school site has 43 pupils this school year with 16 pupils in first grades, five in second grade, seven in third grade, eight in fourth grade and seven in fifth grade.

"We let first and second graders or third and fourth graders sit together but it's inconvenient," Hoa said.

Old textbooks

In addition, as the four classrooms are so close to each other, noise from each classroom can be heard. Lo Van Toan, a teacher at Pang Sang B, said what they found most difficult was collecting enough textbooks and notebooks for the pupils. They only have torn, old textbooks left from previous pupils.

Toan said he was worried that the pupils would drop out of school and the teachers would have to visit each household to persuade them to return to school.
