Teachers call for help over dilapidated nursery school

Teachers and children at a nursery school in a remote district of Dien Bien Province are in need of financial support to rebuild their school.

Ta Lech school site which is part of the Mun Chung Nursery School has three classrooms for 75 children from three to five years old. The wooden classrooms are dilapidated. They don't have proper floors and there are holes in the roofs. The only one classroom has concrete floor is used as a place for the children to nap.

"The classrooms are built in 2007 but they have deteriorated badly. Rain falls into the classes and the water and mud from the lake gets inside too," said Lo Thi Khim, manager of Ta Lech school site.

Mud also gets into the staff room. In addition, since the school is located near lakes, there are many wild animals like snakes often wander into the classrooms.

"There was a time a poisonous snake crawled into the room while the children were napping. Everyone was scared to death and we just took the children and ran. This school site will probably be closed if any child is bitten," she said.

 

  

Poor children at Ta Lech School

The children have to pay VND6,000 (26 US cents) for lunches and dinners. It's small but some families are too poor to afford their meals. Lunches are only rice with tofu and some soup and rarely serve meat.
