According to the latest report from the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, the flash floods triggered by heavy rains in the northern mountainous region from August 1-6 has caused 26 deaths, 27 injuries while 15 others remained missing. Many houses and schools have been also damaged when the new school year is nearing. Total asset losses are estimated at VND940 billion (USD41 million).
Mu Cang Chai District ravaged by the recent flash floods.
Mu Cang Chai District in Yen Bai is among the hardest-hit localities where five pupils have remained missing. Two local schools namely Hoa Lan Nursery School and Thi Tran Secondary School have been damaged. Particularly, the floods also damaged houses of 15 teachers at Thi Tran Secondary School.
On August 7, former vice state president and chairwoman of Vietnam Study Promotion Association Nguyen Thi Doan, decided to use VND150 million (USD6,800) from the association’s fund to support schools which were affected by the floods.
