Bien Thi Xuan suffers from lung cancer
Bien Thi Xuan was born in 1960 in Hung Long Commune. She is one of the poor households in the area and was helped by the local authorities and neighbours to build a small house in the village.She had a son at 20 and worked hard to raise her son up as a single mom. Unfortunately, her son was diagnosed with cancer and died. Four years ago, she was diagnosed with diabetes and the monthly allowance for poor people is not enough to cover the medicine. Neighbours sometimes give her rice and meat.
Xuan was shocked when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. "I wished to die at that very minute and meet my son," she said.
She struggles to go to the chemotherapy sessions and was taken care of by her nieces and nephews. However, Xuan's relatives don't have enough money to pay for her treatment.
Tran Thi Tuyet, Xuan's granddaughter-in-law, said, "Sometimes when it was too painful, she tied up her hands and legs onto the window and sometimes, she was unable to sleep and cried all night."
Nguyen Van Tham, head of Village 7A, said, "We have called for donations for Xuan in our village but it is not enough. We hope she will get more help from the community."
