Red Sunday blood donation programme to be launched

The Red Sunday programme for blood donation 2019 is scheduled to be launched next week with a target to collect around 50,000 units of blood.

The annual event has been jointly held by the Tien Phong (Vanguard) Newspaper, the National Steering Committee for Traffic Safety and the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion for 11 years.

Up to 70 spots in 39 cities and provinces nationwide will be arranged for blood donations. The campaign is targeting to collect 45,000 to 50,000 units of blood, including roughly 6,000 from Hanoi; 3,000 from HCM City, 3,800 from Dak Lak Province; and 1,000 from Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Nam Dịnh, Ha Nam, Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen provinces respectively.

Samsung Vietnam have pledged to contribute 3,000 units to the campaign.

The National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion has called on the community, especially those with Type O blood, to donate blood in an effort to avoid a shortage during the Tet holiday.

"It is estimated that over the next three months, the institute needs about 90,000 units of blood, including more than 36,000 units of Type O,” said the institute’s director Bach Quoc Khanh.
