Old father struggles to raise mentally-ill son
A widower in Thanh Hoa Province is calling for help to treat his 41-year-old son who had mental health problems after an accident.
Hang got married and had his first son, Le Van Truong, in 1978. However, after working in the public security sector for two years, he had a traffic accident which gave him brain damage. Despite many years in the military, Hang didn't have any papers after being discharged so he doesn't have any allowance.
"Since I was contaminated with Agent Orange, my second son was affected. He got married but his family is also very poor," Hang said.
His wife also died years ago so Hang worked as a bricklayer to raise his ill son. Hang said he feared for his son whenever he had a fit and destroyed the furniture and chased Hang out. He fears when his son wanders around under the rain or when they had nothing to eat. Hang has to keep a close eye on Truong because he can't control his bowels and to prevent him from running out to the street.
"My body and my heart hurt. I wish my wife were still here. Being all by myself, sometimes, I just want to die. But then, who will take care of my son?" Hang said.
As he gets older, Hang also feels aches all over his body but doesn't have money to go to the hospital.
