Vu Thi Lien, 52, in Vi Xuyen Town has been living with a disabled leg since she was small.

She remained single until 2004 when she gave birth to an illegitimate daughter named Le Thi Tra Giang.

After Giang was born, Lien’s relatives helped to build her a small house. They bought her a sewing machine so that Lien could earn her living.

In 2017, Lien had some health problems, including pains in the left side of her chest. However, because of the family’s financial difficulties, she ignored this.

After that, she couldn’t stand the pains and came to a local hospital for medical check-ups. Then, she was moved to K Hospital in Hanoi for further diagnosis where doctors said that she was in the final stage of lung cancer.

Lien refused the treatment to come back home so that her daughter will not have to repay the debts for her later. To date, her daughter does not know who her father is.

Just a short time after, her health condition worsened and the relatives encouraged her to return hospital.

Neighbours and relatives borrowed her some money for the treatment. Since late 2017, she has received treatment Phu Tho General Hospital’s Tumour Centre.

In 2017, Giang wanted to leave school to take care of her mother, but Lien did not allow her daughter to do so.

Dr. Pham Tien Chung from the hospital said Lien’s treatment is once a month and the medicine does not belong to the health insurance list. It costs her at least VND9 million (USD391.304) for the monthly treatment.
