Phan Trong Tue, chief nurse of the hospital’s Intensive Care Ward, said that the patient’s family is very poor while she needs urgent treatment due to her severe condition.

The burns have affected up to 65% of Thao’s body with 40% being serious, said Dr Le Quang Thao from the hospital. Doctors have conducted skin transplants and she would need more surgery.

Her daily treatment fees alone are around VND7-8 million (USD304.34-347.82), excluding health insurance.

Thao’s son Ho Van Hung said that his father died 10 years ago and since then his mother was the main breadwinner. She works for a fish processing workshop. She used to catch fish and then bake or steam them for sale.

On the night of August 1, she unluckily slipped and then fell into the fish roaster. She was taken to a local hospital, but doctors there decided to send her to the National Institute of Burns in Hanoi due to her critical state.

The family tried to borrow money from different sources to pay the hospital fees for Thao, but the support remains modest.

According to doctors, many patients who are in the same condition as Thao have recovered; so they hope that donors can join hands to help her.
