Wife suffers from mental illness after husband paralysed
A couple from Can Tho City are in desperate need of financial support to help cover medical treatment as the wife suffers from mental illness and her husband is paralysed after a stroke.
Le Thi Phi, Khuong's mother, said she had nine children and Khuong is the most hard-working of all. He took care of all the housework and hard work at home while studying well at school. He got married at 28 and then went to HCM City to find jobs. After their children were born, they went to Long An Province.
In April 2019, while going to So Do Primary School to work as a guard, Khuong suddenly had a stroke and was transferred to the hospital. His family had to borrow VND100m (USD4,300) for his brain surgery. Even though Khuong was saved, he became paralysed.
Unfortunately, his wife became mentally ill and wandered everywhere. Sometimes, she would destroy furniture and scream at other people. After seeing that Khuong's wife couldn't take care of him, their relatives then helped move them to Can Tho City to live with Khuong's mother. Their son had to drop out of school to find work while his daughter got married and lives far from home. Her family is also too poor to offer any help.
Khuong's wife got better after being treated at Can Tho Mental Health Hospital. Khuong's mother sold a part of a field for VND60m (USD2,600) to build a new house for them. As the house was half-completed, his wife's condition worsened again so all of the money was used for her treatment.
Nguyen Van Dung, vice chairman of Xuan Thang Commune People's Committee, said, "We have started the procedures so that Khuong's family can receive a monthly allowance for poor households. I hope that the community will help them overcome difficulty, especially completing the house for their whole family."
