Mother struggling against cancer calls for help to raise small children
A family in Bac Giang Province is calling for financial support to save the mother from cancer and the new-born daughter.
"My husband is a porter. He's still working every day for more money this Tet. My daughter is crying because we have just run out of formula milk," she said.
Thanh said she and four siblings live with her father after her parents separated when she was only seven months old. Her father died when she was 22 years old. While working at a factory, she met and married her husband.
"I was pregnant with the second child in April 2020 when I felt really tired. I just thought that was because of the pregnancy who would have thought that fate could be so cruel," she said.
Thanh was diagnosed with throat cancer. She went from hospital to hospital but she refused treatments because she wanted to give birth to a healthy baby. In August 2020, she fainted suddenly and was transferred to Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi. She gave birth prematurely but the doctors were able to save both mother and child.
While her daughter was incubated, Thanh started having chemotherapy sessions. Her husband took a long leave to take care of Thanh at the hospital and put up the land use rights certificate as collateral to borrow VND100m (USD4,300). After the money ran out, Thanh went home.
Hoang Van Hue from Dong Son Commune Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs said, "We all really feel for her and called for help after knowing that she refused treatment to save the baby. But everyone is poor here so we can only do so much."
Thanh said, "I only want to live to take care of my children. I only want help to raise them."
