Kidney failure patients in need of help amid Covid-19
A group of over 100 patients with kidney failure in Hanoi are in need of help as they have faced difficulties in travelling and other daily activities since the new Covid-19 outbreak.
Nguyen Thi Su from Bac Giang Province said she had gone to Bach Mai Hospital and Military Hospital 354 for 13 years for dialysis. After the social distancing rules were applied for Covid-19 prevention, she and other patients have faced many difficulties.
In order to go to the Military Hospital 345 three times a week, she must have a travel permit issued by the hospital. Her motorbike-taxi drivers are also kidney failure patients but in better condition. "They only charge me VND200,000 (USD8.70) for a week. We don't dare to call other drivers and there's no one to call anyway," she said.
Luong Thi Huyen from Hai Duong Province has also lived in Alleyway 121 for years. When social distancing was applied, many kidney failure patients at Bach Mai Hospital were sent to other hospitals. "I can walk to Bach Mai Hospital but now I have to call a motorbike-taxi to go to Thanh Nhan Hospital. I had thought of living closer to Thanh Nhan Hospital but I already got used to this place and the cost of living here is cheaper," she said.
Vu Thi Ngat from Nam Dinh Province said, "Now we only go to the market like once a week. We don't have a fridge so we have to send the food to acquaintances' houses. People who live alone here have the hardest life."
46-year-old Mai Anh Tuan is voted as the head of the kidney failure village because he has struggled with kidney failure for 26 years and stayed the longest at the village. He is the bridge connecting the patients with organisations and groups.
Nguyen Van Giang, head of the Residential Cluster 2 said the local authorities often work with charity groups to help the patients.
