Nguyen Thi Sam and Nguyen Van Duong have three children together. However, their eldest son and youngest daughter have both suffered from mental illness since birth. They often scream and destroy furniture.

Sam gave birth to her son in 1996 and her daughter in 2000. She had noticed strange signs when they were a few months old but she thought that they were malnourished and underdeveloped at first. It took a long time for her to discover that they had cerebral hypoxia.
"My son often hits his chest and bangs his head on the floor. Hair can't grow on parts of his head and people are scared when they first saw him," Sam said. "My daughter hits her brother when she has a fit."

Sam and her husband can hardly have a good night sleep since their daughter often wakes up at night.
Sam's husband, Nguyen Van Duong was diagnosed with diabetes and spinal degeneration. After he was admitted to the hospital, Sam struggles to take care of their son and daughter at home and her husband at the hospital. Their second daughter was healthy but she has been unable to find a job and is stuck in HCM City.
Sam only depends on the monthly allowance for disabled people to get by. Recently, a neighbour hired Sam to separate durian seeds and flesh for a small income.
Nguyen Xuan Luong, chairman of Dak Mil Town People's Committee said during the social distancing period, they had provided 60kg of rice and other necessities to Sam's family.
"Their situation is very difficult and needs help from kind people," he said.
