Vi Bui Nhat Anh, 10, and his sister Vi Thi Bao Uyen, 7, are now living with their paternal grandmother Vi Thi Cuong, 60, after their parents died.

Cuong said that her son and daughter-in-law came to the southern province of Binh Duong to work, leaving their children to stay at home with her. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the couple became unemployed and had to return home.

Then, Cuong’s daughter-in-law became pregnant with the third child. One day, while working, she had an occupational accident when she was in the sixth month of pregnancy, causing the stillbirth. But she did not go to hospital for a medical check-up and her condition worsened. After having surgery, she died.

After Cuong’s daughter-in-law died, her son committed suicide.

The house where Cuong is living with her grandchildren is made from wood and sheeting and could collapse at any time.

The two orphans in dire need of support

Meanwhile, Cuong is also weak as she faces severe osteoarthritis.

Hoang Thi Hai Yen, vice chairwoman of Ia Jloi Commune, said that Cuong’s family is among the poorest in the locality. The two orphans receive social security benefits of VND500,000 per month from local authorities.
