The boy’s mother Nguyen Thi Van, 39, said that his entire body is paralysed, so he can’t move. He has had to use ventilators since having surgery.

Van said that he was often sick as he was born prematurely. He only started to learn to walk at the age of four. He was then diagnosed with Down syndrome.

In May this year, Nam faced serious headaches and a high fever. After three consecutive days of high temperatures, he was taken to Nam Dinh Paediatrics Hospital where the boy was diagnosed with an intramedullary tumour.

The boy underwent two surgeries; however, his condition did not improve.

Van’s family mostly depends on farming. Her husband does some seasonal jobs to earn extra income.

The couple have borrowed money to cover their son’s treatment and now owe nearly VND200 million (USD8,621).

Doctor Nguyen Quang Hung from Nam Dinh Paediatrics Hospital said that Nam’s condition is critical. He now has to depend on ventilators and the treatment is costly.
