The only kindergarten in Phu Lam Village in the mountainous district of Huong Khe hosts 40 kids across four different age groups. There are just two rooms, a 30-square-metre classroom, and a 25-square-metre room where students have lunch and take naps.
According to teacher Le Thi Huu, who has 30 years of teaching at the school, the rooms have deteriorated badly over many years. "We've tried to repair the tables and chairs and fix the walls, but the conditions have recently worsened," the teacher said. "We're very worried about our safety now."
Speaking with Dantri/Dtinews, the headmaster of the school, Le Thi Quyen, admitted that the facilities have deteriorated but they cannot afford upgrades. "Phu Lam Village lies in a remote mountainous area where the lives of local people are still very difficult," she said. "Many students are from the Lao Thung ethnic group who earn their living from small-scale farming. And the district's budget is completely limited. So, we hope to receive support to help us build a new, larger classroom here."
