Tran Thi Doan, 38, is caring for her 17-year-old son Nguyen Ngoc Khanh at the Vietnam-Germany Hospital in Hanoi. Khanh suffered from serious traumatic brain injuries after a traffic accident while on the way home from school in November last year. He survived after three life-saving operations.

"It was so painful looking at my son suffering," Doan said in tears. "But I was more worried about where to find more money to continue his treatment as doctors said that he needs more operations to recover from his injuries."

The poor woman said that her husband who used to be the breadwinner of the family lost both legs after a traffic accident in 2022 while working as a driver.

"We still have debts of over VND400 million which we borrowed to cover my husband’s treatment," she said. "He's now disabled and can’t work. We've also borrowed over VND100 million more to take my son to hospital. Our house is now collateral for that loan. We’ve run out of money now and I can’t borrow more. I hope people can help save our son."
