Nguyen Cao Thi Yen, 34, from Dong Xuan District’s Xuan Phuoc Commune, was diagnosed with Japanese encephalitis when she was eight years old, causing hemiplegia.

Around 10 years ago, she married a man in Dak Lak Province and they had two children, a daughter aged nine and a son aged seven. The couple recently divorced.
By late 2023, Yen and her son Le Tran Tuan Kiet moved to live with her father. However, Yen’s father often gets drunk and has beaten Yen and her child.
Yen’s neighbours were sympathetic and built a temporary tent for Yen and her child. The six-metre-square tent is covered with metal sheeting and surrounded by plastic and coconut leaves for protection.

However, her father continued to attack Yen and her child many times and they had to seek shelter at their neighbours.
Meanwhile, Kiet, 7, is suffering from autism, making it difficult for him to speak.
Xuan Phuoc Commune Vice Chairman Ngo Tat Thanh said that Yen’s family were very poor, and hoped people could help support them.
