Social networking sites trouble for Vietnamese celebrities

Several Vietnamese celebrities have fallen victim to bad attention after posting their opinions on delicate issues on social networking sites.

Although these types of sites have been a boon in terms of marketing and promotion for many stars, others have seen blowback from their internet activities. Singers such as Dan Truong have faced such controversy.

Recently, when Dan Truong posted several of his wedding photos on Facebook. In response there were not only many congratulations, but also a considerable amount of negative comments from fans.

Bui Anh Tuan, who built up a very large Vietnamese fan base, was also shown the ugly side of the internet in the form of Facebook slander after the reality show The Voice Vietnam used the song "Lac" (Lost) without permission from the songwriter. Rumours about his unprofessionalism at work spread very quickly, and Bui Anh Tuan announced that he would take a hiatus.

At times these sites have been used as a battle ground between performers. The singer My Le was publicly criticised by a judge of the show Just the Two of Us for incoporating dance music in a jazz performance.

In response, the singer posted, "Some people should do research into the difference between pop, rock, dance and jazz music."

A number of performers have benefited from bad internet attention.

Meanwhile, actor Binh Minh said, " Artists are famous for seeking attention, but they should be more careful about how much they want to make public."

Actress Kim Huyen said, "I once had a Facebook account because it was convenient for getting in touch with friends, but there came a point where I had to take it down. The things people say online can be extremely rude."
