Vietnamese badminton star Nguyen Tien Minh failed to defend his title at the Yonex Chinese Taipei Open, which concluded in New Taipei City yesterday.

Minh, the world No 5 and tournament favourite, did not look quite his usual self as he lost 21-19, 9-21, 18-21 to unseeded Son Won-ho of South Korea in the men's final, which lasted around 80 minutes.

South Korean players also dominated all other categories of the annual US$200,000 event.

In the women's singles, No 1 seed Sung Ji-huyn defeated Tai Tzu Ying, No 2, of the hosts 21-16, 21-9.

Shin Baek-choel and Jang Ye-na trounced teammates Yoo Yeon-seong and Eom Hye-won 22-20, 12-21, 21-16 in the mixed doubles pool.

The men's doubles saw Kim Ki-jung and Kim Sa-rang defeat Lee Sheng Mu and Tsai Chia Hsin of Chinese Taipei 21-11, 21-11.

There was no match in the women's doubles as Jung Kying-eun and Kim Ha-na were awarded victory after teammate pair Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan withdrew.
