A source told Dantri/Dtinews that the singer died at 11.57 am on September 28 at the Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.
The last press release was also posted on her Facebook account on Tuesday afternoon, saying that the singer was now resting in peace.
Phi Nhung was born in the central province of Gia Lai to a Vietnamese woman and an American soldier. Both her parents died when she was small and she lived with her Vietnamese grandparents.
She left Vietnam for the US in 1989 following the US policy to support children born to American soldiers during the Vietnam War. She became a famous singer in the Vietnamese community in the US.
In recent years, Phi Nhung returned to Vietnam and continued to earn her fame as a singer, actress, and MC. She also participated in various charitable activities in Vietnam. She adopted 23 children from disadvantaged backgrounds, most of whom she met at local pagodas during her charity trips.

Phi Nhung tested positive for Covid-19 while participating in a charity group to cook and offer free meals to homeless people in Ho Chi Minh City during the ongoing outbreak. She was admitted to the Gia An 115 Hospital on August 19 but her condition continued to worsen before she was transferred to the Cho Ray Hospital on August 26. Doctors at Cho Ray Hospital said that the singer was given intensive care and treatment, including using ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine but her condition did not improve.
According to her only daughter Wendy Pham who is in the US, Phi Nhung had booked a flight to the US in July to prepare for a show scheduled for August 22 but she then cancelled to stay in HCM City and participate in various charity activities here.
On her Facebook account, the singer also shared a lot of activities during her trips to donate food, facemasks to poor people as well as medical equipment to local hospitals.

Before Phi Nhung, many artists in Vietnam have died of Covid-19 since the fourth outbreak hit the country including artist Le Thanh Thu, rocker Trung Thanh Sago, actress Kim Phuong, singer Phi Hai, and actor Khai Hoan.
