The second Asia–Europe Music Festival and the 34th Festival and Conference of the Asia–Pacific Composers’ League officially kicked off at the Hanoi Opera House on October 12.

A performance at the opening ceremony

This year’s festival features the participation of nearly 200 artists and musicians from 30 countries and territories around the world, including Vietnam, the UK, Poland, Canada, Colombia, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Hong Kong (China), France, Australia, Spain and Turkey.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Huu Thinh, Chairman of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations, said that the festival featured a combination of the music of the two continents, with numerous compositions by world-renowned artists.

He also emphasised that the event was a good opportunity to introduce the achievements of Vietnamese revolutionary and contemporary music, as well as works by Vietnamese musicians, to international friends.

The festival and conference will also promote the land, people and traditional culture of Vietnam, contributing to tightening the relations between the host and other countries in the Asia–Pacific region and the world, Thinh added.

At the opening ceremony, the delegates and visitors enjoyed a unique symphony with performances by artists and musicians from Tatarstan (Russia), Japan, Hong Kong (China), Singapore and Vietnam.

Notably, the festival attracted a large number of renowned professional artists in the field of symphonic, choral and chamber music from Vietnam and from around the world, including Vietnam’s National Symphony Orchestra, People’s Artist Nguyen Thieu Hoa (a conductor), Meritorious Artist Bui Cong Duy (a violist) and a violin/piano duet from Spain.

The festival, which will run from October 12-18, features eleven major concerts in Hanoi and the province of Vinh Phuc, with more than 100 performances.

In addition, two seminars themed “New Musical Exchanges between Asian and European Countries” and “Vietnam’s Dan bau (‘Monochord’)” will also be held on the occasion of the event.

The closing ceremony for the event will take place at 8pm on October 18 at the Vietnam National Academy of Music.
