 >>  News sites fined for coverage of comedian sex offender
Vietnam Television has cut all scenes featuring convicted paedophile Minh Beo.

Last year, the 39-year-old comedian Minh Beo was deported from the US after serving nine months in jail following a conviction for sexually molesting a 16-year-old boy and attempting to commit a lewd act on a child under 14.

Since returning to Vietnam, the convicted sex offender faced criticism from the public, even artists. Songwriter Nguyen Quoc Trung called on local artists to boycott Minh Beo, saying that he should not be allowed to participate in the entertainment industry.

Earlier this year, three news sites in Vietnam were fined a total VND80 million (USD3,570) for publishing many articles about the return of Minh Beo. He was puzzlingly given a warm welcome by fans and many artists on his return.

The sites ran stories about Minh Beo’s happy statuses on his Facebook page along with lots of his photos. He told fans that he was in good health and thanked them for their support, but made no admission or apology for his criminal sexual assault on underage boys in the US.

At a press conference to introduce the film Buoc Nhay Hoang Vu (Dancing with the stars) on May 4, Ngo Hong Dan, head of the Vietnam Television’s Film Division, said that all scenes featuring Minh Beo in the film were removed.

The decision was made following the public’s strong opposition to his appearance in the entertainment industry for his sexual crimes as well as his inappropriate behaviour after returning to Vietnam.

Minh Beo-related scenes are small, so after being cut, they do not affect the film, Dan noted. Minh Beo has also been banned from acting as a host of charity Golden Rattle or Luc Lac Vang TV show.
