Vietnam is part of a new global film movement that begins Saturday, screening films on one night simultaneously in 12 countries.

Future Shorts ONE will take place in many places, from music venues, cinemas, theatres, clubs and warehouses to schools, hospitals and prisons in 50 cities.

The UK-based film festival aims to break “boundaries, borders and convention,” and ignite a multi-cultural dialogue around film, culture and ideas, says a press release.

Future Shorts ONE’s November edition will feature the best in international short films, including “The Answer” directed by John Hillcoat (“The Road”), “Plastic Bag” – a story of a lost bag narrated by legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog (“Bad Lieutenant”), and a depiction of life turned upside-down in 1977 Berlin from leading Swedish filmmaker Jonas Odell in “Tussilago”.

Selected local films by emerging filmmakers will also be screened.

The festival will travel further in Southeast Asia to Jakarta, Manila and Phnom Penh.

Future Shorts believes that all people regardless of geography, status or wealth should be able to see the most important and exciting new work from the world’s boldest filmmakers.

“From New York to Sydney, from HCMC to Berlin, from Edinburgh to Copenhagen, this is the next generation of film festivals… This is a global cultural movement connecting creativity with people all over the world,” the release says.

Audiences will be encouraged to connect with viewers from different locations through Facebook and Twitter to share their experiences and vote on their favorite films.

Fabien Riggall, founder and director of Future Shorts, said, “Future Shorts is looking to bring together people everywhere to experience a film festival in a different way.

“With Future Shorts ONE, we are launching the biggest independent film community in the world.”

In Ho Chi Minh City, the films will be screened at the rooftop of FLOW, a new downtown bar restaurant dedicated to providing a platform for the arts, at 88 Ho Tung Mau, District 1. Tickets cost VND60,000 (apiece) and students with valid ID will receive 50 percent discounts.

Film lovers in Hanoi will gather at Almaz at 21/52 To Ngoc Van, Tay Ho, an exhibition and performance space run by the group of artists Almaz Collective. Visitors are suggested to donate at least VND50,000.

Entrance is free in both places for filmmakers.
