Drug deaths mar Hanoi music festival

Hanoi police have launched an investigation into a case in which seven people died and five others have lost consciousness while attending a music show in Hanoi on Sunday night.

The Trip to the Moon music event was held at Tay Ho District’s water park area, attracting a crowd of around 5,000.

According to the police, at around 11:10 pm on the same day, they were informed that Hanoi Heart Hospital’s branch in Tay Ho District received two men hospitalised suffering cardiac arrests. Despite doctors’ efforts, they both died after around 30 minutes later. The men had attended the music festival.

At the same time, E Hospital also received eight people from the festival. Among those, one had died on the way to the hospital. After that, four others died at the hospital, while the remainder lost consciousness.

Bach Mai Hospital is providing treatment for the two others who are still in a coma.

Seven people were recorded as dead as of noon today. They have been all tested positive to drugs. Authorities have not identified which drugs were involved.

The police had seized suspected drug substances and laughing gas balloons at the scene.

The police have joined hands with the Ministry of Health and other agencies for the investigation.

A press conference is expected to be held this afternoon in Hanoi.  

The music show was licensed by the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports.
