The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) announced the selection of Phan Thanh Hung as the coach for the national football team.

Coach Phan Thanh Hung will lead the national football team from June

Hung will sign a four-month contract to lead the national football team after the end of the current V-League season.

Hung, who has acted as assistant to several foreign coaches over the years, will be paid at least VND200 million (USD9,583) per month, the VFF said.

Right after taking his post, Hung, who currently leads Hanoi T&T, will select the national squad for this year’s AFF Cup scheduled to take place in Thailand and Malaysia.

He had worked as assistant to former national team coaches Henrique Calisto and Falko Goetz and has received high praise for his professionalism.

He also previously led U-23 national team during the HCM City international football tournament in 2010, and took the team through the qualification rounds at the Asian Games in 2010.

VFF Chairman Nguyen Trong Hy said, “Over the recent months, the VFF and the National Coaches Council struggled to find a new coach after the dismissal of Falko Goetz. We had shortlisted three coaches including Le Huynh Duc from SHB Danang, Nguyen Huu Thang from Song Lam Nghe An, and Phan Thanh Hung from Hanoi T&T proved the best candidate for the post.”

Hy added a short-term contract for the national coach was the most suitable solution under the current circumstances.

Hung confirmed the deal with DTiNews this morning. He said he would start leading the national team from June through to the end of the AFF Cup.

Next month, he will lead the team in two friendship matches against Chinese and Hong Kong opposition.
