The signing saw the participation of Hoang Anh Gia Lai boss Doan Nguyen Duc alongside representatives from Sint-Truidense FC.

Phuong recently ended his contract early with South Korean club Incheon United. He only played eight matches for the club in four months and failed to score.

“When I was 17-18 years old, I came to Europe for a training course. I had the chance to play with some European teams of young players, which has given me some experience. I believe that I can adapt to Belgian football,” Phuong said.

He admitted that he was not succeeded to play for Japan’s Mito Hollyhock and South Korea’s Incheon United; but he felt he’d learned much from his failures.

“I’ll try my best to correct my shortcomings while playing in Japan and South Korea to be successful Belgium,” Phuong noted.

Sint-Truiden Club was purchased by Japanese company DMM.com in 2017. During the 2018-19 season, Sint-Truidense recruited five Japanese players and Cong Phuong is the sixth Asian player in the team.
