Vietnam conceded a 0-1 defeat to Iraq in a quarter-final match on April 26 evening, bidding farewell to the ongoing 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup in Qatar.

In a tackle in the second half goalie Quan Van Chuan stepped out to block the ball, swinging his hand and hitting Ali Jasim.

Referee Ko Hyung-jin reviewed the situation with the VAR support and came to the conclusion that the Vietnamese goalie made the mistake.

From the penalty box, the Iraqi striker scored the only goal for Iraq, sending Iraq to the semi-finals.

After the match, Van Chuan said the Vietnamese players performed quite well in the match. However, he did not coordinate well with midfielders, leading to a penalty.

“I’m very sad because the team’s goal is to get a ticket to the Olympics,” shared the goalie.

In addition, defender Nguyen Manh Hung was red-carded following his foul with a Iraqi player in the 90’+1 minute.

Vietnam could not find an equalizer for nearly 13 minutes of extra time, exiting the game.
