Despite the dangers in performing street shows such as sword swallowing, many poor performers in HCMC continue to earn a living from dangerous stunts despite a lack of insurance.

 Street performer Chien in hospital

Le Phuoc Chien, a 19 year old boy, started studying street performing arts over a year ago. He often had to swallow razors, hot coal or even snakes to earn tips. When he became more fluent, Chien was invited to perform at weddings or parties.

On December 31, 2012, Chien was invited to a wedding. He started with his usual hot coal and snake swallowing and then ended the show with his sword swallowing act.

With the sword deep in his throat, a drunken guest suddenly fell against him. Although he was pushed, Chien tried to pull the sword out, but he already felt hard to breathe.

He was sent to the local hospital immediately and then was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital for further treatment. Doctor Pham Van Dong of Cho Ray Hospital's Department of Surgery and Anaesthesia said Chien had punctured his gullet by 2cm.

Chien is still in critical condition and doctors are unable to say whether he will make a full recovery.

"I know there are grave consequences but I have to earn money. Sometimes I could only earn some small change after a whole night." V.K.H, a 17 year old street performer, said.

Some performers even use curved blades in their performances to attract attention. But despite their tough act, some audiences are still reluctant to part with their money.

H. said sword swallowing was quite popular in HCMC. Several years ago, audience were more generous and the performers could earn big money by eating coal or breathing fire. But now, even with dangerous acts that could cost them their life, audiences seem indifferent.

"When I performed on Thanh Thai Street, one person told me that he would not believe me if he couldn't see some blood when I swallowed the sword. I felt so dejected and moved on to another location." H. said.

There is strong competition among HCMC’s street performers. If a street performer doesn't have money to start their career, they will have to depend on a 'manager' and pay the manager 70% of the earning every night.
