 >>  Facelift for HCM City Post Office stirs criticism
Public concern has been raised over the new colour of the Hanoi Opera House after recent maintenance,  with cultural experts and architects agreeing it should adhere to the building's original historic and architectural values.

Many claim historical integrity has been compromised

Residents in the capital were surprised by the facelift of the Hanoi Opera House, which has been painted in too bright and modern colour.

Architect Tran Huy Anh, a member of the Vietnam Association of Architect regretted seeing what had been done to one of the city's cultural symbols.

The original colour of the Hanoi Opera House, and several other French-styled buildings, is a pale yellow, not bold and bright.

“In 1996, the house was restored and the project successfully preserved the original historical and cultural values of the work,” Anh said.

“It’s unacceptable to apply modern architectural standards to a bulding more than 100 years old,” he said.

Writer and cultural expert Nguyen Ngoc Tien said he was disappointed to see the new colour of the Opera House. The maintenance of such an important historical work should be carefully studied to foster creativity, but ensure its core values.

“Many architectural works have lost their core values after maintenance. Many scientists and architects have raised their voices in opposition to what is being done. The management agency should carefully consider such things before deciding to change the colour,” Tien said.

Nguyen Thi Minh Nguyet, director of the Hanoi Opera House, told DTiNews the painting is under the annual maintenance plan, which is financed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

“We sought approval from the ministry before carrying out maintenance. We have yet to complete the work, so the current colour is not the final facelift of the house,” she said.
