More rail workers quit jobs due to low salaries

The number of railway workers who have quit their jobs due to low salaries have been on the rise, which has become an alarming issue for the sector.

Le Huu Hung, chairman of Ha Hai Railway Joint Stock Company which manages the railway section from Hanoi to Haiphong City, said that since 2016, dozens of the company’s staff have left. This has resulted in the serious shortage of workers for the operation of stations in Gia Lam and Yen Vien areas in Hanoi.

The low income discourages railway workers

“Prices of goods in Hanoi are high and the average income of VND6 million (USD272.7) per month is not enough for people who live there. As a result, many have left their jobs, so we have had to send many staff members from other localities to replace them. However, this is the temporary solution. The company has recently published job adverts in newspapers, but, to date, no one has applied,” Hung added.

According to Hung, the company has proposed to Vietnam Railways to increase salaries and bonuses for staff who work in big cities such as Hanoi. In the long run, the railway sector needs to reform technologies to attract more passengers.

Phu Khanh Railway Joint Stock Company in Khanh Hoa Province is also in the same situation.

Nguyen Nhu Binh, the company director, said the company has only 745 staff, 75 fewer compared to 2016. Meanwhile, around 30 people have applied to leave, citing the low salary of VND6-7 million per month.

Over the recent months, the company has faced difficulties in ensuring the sufficient number of workers for some positions such as signal men.

“We have not yet been unable to find enough people despite the job adverts. Some people have recruited but then quit their job just some months later,” Binh said.

The best solution for the company at present is using automatic equipment for the replacement, but this is impossible due to the limited financial capacity.

After 28 years working in the railway sector, Pham Hong Son, 48, from Ha Hai Railway JS Company has decided to leave the firm. He was provided with a subsidy of VND40 million (USD1,800) and an unemployment payout of VND3 million (USD136.3) per month within a year.
