Hospitals in the northern province of Quang Ninh have attracted more doctors after local authorities offered higher financial incentives to healthcare workers.

Quang Ninh has provided financial support ranging from VND200-750 million (USD8,140-USD30,500) for distinguished doctors committing to serve in the province since January.

Doctors with experience are required to serve for a minimum of five years, while new graduates are expected to commit to seven years. Eligible candidates must hold degrees from higher education institutions recognised by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Training.

This initiative is part of efforts to attract medical professionals to state-run healthcare facilities and drug addiction treatment centres through 2025. The goal is to enhance healthcare and treatment services for local residents, aiming to recruit at least 298 doctors.

Deputy director of the Quang Ninh Provincial Department of Health, Trinh Van Manh, said that they have so far attracted 14 doctors since applying the new policy.

"Some communal healthcare centres including Dong Trieu and Quang Yen have also received doctors," the official said, adding that they are working with concerned agencies and departments to employ more doctors for localities in need.

Like many other localities, Quang Ninh has seen a large number of doctors leaving public hospitals. Statistics showed that more than 100 doctors have left local hospitals and healthcare centres since over the past two years.

The province currently has over 2,300 doctors including over 1,700 working at public hospitals, with an average rate of 17 doctors for 10,000 people. However, more than a half of those doctors are working at provincial-level hospitals while a fifth of healthcare centres at local communes have no doctors.
