Two more suspensions over illegal land repossession in Haiphong

Two more officials involved in the controversial forced relocation of residents from their land were suspended on Monday.


Chairman of Quang Vinh Commune's People’s Council, Pham Dang Hoan, was suspended on Monday.

The suspension of two officials in Vinh Quang Commune,  Le Thanh Liem, Chairman of the People’s Committee and Pham Dang Hoan, Secretary, who also served as Chairman of the People’s Council, were officially announced at 5pm at the headquarters of the communal People’s Committee.

The two officials were suspended from their posts, which they were to serve from 2010-2015, for their involvement in the the illegal, forcible seizure of land and the destruction of the house owned by Doan Van Vuon. The leaders of Tien Lang District, who made the announcement nominated Liem and Hoan’s deputies to take over these positions.

Leaders of Tien Lang Districts said that they were still trying to discern the culpabilities of all the officials involved and decide on punishments.

Previously, on February 11, the chairman of Tien Lang District People’s Committee, Le Van Hien, who had directly ordered the seizure on January 5, along with his deputy, Nguyen Van Khanh, were suspended.

On February 12, the investigative team subpoenaed Le Van Hien, Le Thanh Liem - Hien’s brother - Nguyen Van Khanh and Pham Dang Hoan to investigate the destruction of Vuon’s house and lagoon.

The team also summoned several of the people who were physically involved in demolishing the house. These men testified that they were simply following the orders of Liem and Hoan.

The Haiphong People’s Committee also ordered the Tien Lang District authorities to revoke their illegal decision take Vuon's land, make reports to the Prime Minister and strictly adhere to his directives on the issue. The reports are due before March 30.
