Vu Tien Son was Deputy Head of Haiphong City’s police division, in charge of social crimes (PC45). Son was known for his dedication and capacity from his work on a number of large cases.

Earlier, Police in Haiphong arrested Vu Van Sau, head of the police force in An Tho Commune, for forging papers from an older case, involving an anti-smuggling officer named Dong Xuan Phong and using them to help Duong Chi Dung to evade arrest on May 17.

Sau gave Dong Xuan Phong an ID card bearing the name Hoang Van Linh, but with Phong’s photo. Phong later used this same false card in applying for a passport under the name of Linh and then used it for helping Dung flee Vietnam.

Phong has been indited for aiding and abetting criminals, but remains at large.

Dung, who was also former director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, was arrested on September 4 under an international warrant for alleged economic offenses committed when he was chairman of the board of the State-owned enterprise, Vinalines.

Dung was caught in another Southeast Asian nation and extradited to Vietnam by the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol).

According to Article 75 of Vietnam Civil Code, the highest punishment for people who aid others in evasion of criminal offenses, he could face 20 years in prison.
